This Site Is Hosted By Toby Bridges, Author Of 14 Books & More Than 1,000 Magazine Articles On Muzzleloading & Muzzleloader Hunting!
The original North American Muzzleloader Hunting website has been very well received, but the web hosting service I used to bring that site to the internet simply became far too difficult to work with, and building anything became a real nightmare. Over a 7 year period, I spent more than 12,000 hours doing the research...testing...compiling of data...and getting that information on the website. And now, I will bring all of that muzzleloading information to you here, in a new format that will give you more options and ways to enjoy and utilize it.
By the end of August, we aim to have at least 30 reports and articles published here, and to have a great start on some fresh new muzzleloader ballistics and trajectory charts. As always, anyone with a muzzleloader performance problem is invited to e-mail me for any help I can provide.
Send your questions and problems to me at toby@namlhunt.com

Today's Top Performing Rifles...
No muzzleloader in history performed as well as today's in-line ignition rifles - especially the newer No. 209 primer models. North American Muzzleloader Hunting will keep you informed of new models and concepts. Such rifles are prefered by 90-percent of all muzzleloading hunters in the U.S. And that is due to their accuracy and knockdown power.
Today's Top Performing Bullets...
Modern saboted muzzleloader hunting bullets no longer resemble the old soft lead conical bullets from the past, like the big .58 Civil War "Minie" bullet shown here. Likewise, neither do they perform anything like them. Aerodynamic designs like those shown here shoot significantly flatter than any muzzleloader bullet from the past. The much higher ballistic coefficient of the spire-point and spitzer style bullets insure greater velocity retention...and that the bullet will drive home with more energy - for a quick, clean harvest of the game being hunted. Most modern in-line rifles now retain more energy at 200 yards than older rifles had at 100 yards.
Get Optimum Traditional Performance...
Rifles capable of 200-yard game taking performance were not "invented" with the introduction of the modern in-line rifle. Bullet shooting rifles replaced most round ball rifles during the 1840s and 1850s, and in the hands of a marksman, these rifles were fully capable of keeping big 400- to 500-grain bullets inside of 2 to 3 inches at 220-yards (40 rods). This website will cover such rifles...and modern remakes of these mid 1800s long range muzzleloaders.
Modern Loads & Ballistics...
This page will offer a tremendous variety of loads for the modern in-line ignition rifles - both those earlier No. 11 percussion cap ignited models and the more recent No. 209 primer ignition rifles. The loads and ballistics will be for the more popular pre-packaged modern saboted bullets...a number of excellent bullets that can be matched with sabots...and modern conical bullets.
Everything Else Muzzleloader Hunting...
On this website, you will also find articles on required energy levels for taking different big game... muzzleloader product reviews...articles on front-loading handguns...hunting wild turkeys with a muzzle-loaded shotgun... muzzleloader cleaning tips...troubleshooting accuracy problems...hunting small game with a muzzleloader...updates on muzzleloader legislation and regulation changes...plus much, much more.
Today's Top Performing Powders...
Modern black powder substitutes are fully capable of taking modern in-line rifle velocities on past 2,000 f.p.s. The powder shown here, Blackhorn 209, allows you to load and shoot 50 or more shots without having to wipe the bore of fouling. Even with that many rounds, there is no loss of accuracy, the fouling is not corrosive, and the light powder residue left in the bore can be cleaned out with two solvent dampened patches.
Today's Best Muzzleloader Optics...
A quality scope, designed specifically for use on a high performance in-line muzzleloader, like the Hi-Lux Optics TB-ML shown on the new Knight Rifles "Mountaineer" turns these rifles into serious big game rifles...fully capable of taking game as large as elk out to and slightly past 200 yards. Multi-reticle scopes such as this compensate for bullet drop, and using the proper range reticle, the muzzleloading hunter can hold "dead on" out to 250 yards.
Optimum Modern Muzzleloader Performance...
Today's modern in-line rifles and loads simply make it easier for today's modern muzzleloading hunter to achieve 200-yard performance. Just about any in-line rifle, with the proper combination of powder and sabot/bullet is fully capable of taking game at that range. Host Toby Bridges hung his tag on this buck on the last day of the Nebraska muzzleloader season...with a single 191-yard shot.
Traditional Loads & Ballistics...
When this page on this website is completed, it will include loads for most of the more popular modern reproductons of rifles from the past...and custom built copies of those rifles as well. Here you will find patched round ball loads and ballistics...along with a great selection of loads and ballistics for those rifles which have just a bit faster rifling twists for stabilizing longer bore-sized lead bullets.
Muzzleloader Hunting Is Hunting...
Just like hunting with modern firearms...or bow & arrow...muzzleloading hunters rely on a lot of other products to give them the edge they need to be successful. We will review treestands, game calls, packs, knives, hunting scents, binoculars, camouflaged clothing, food plot products, game carts, foot wear, ground blinds, collapsible shooting rests...you name it...and we'll review it here for you.
